Keeping a Camera System From Becoming a Security Hole

August 26, 2026 5 min read

An internet-exposed recorder with a default password is a liability. Isolation and remote access done properly cost nothing extra.

Stop forwarding ports

Port forwarding a recorder to the open internet is still the most common mistake we find in existing installs. Scanners locate these within hours. Modern systems use an outbound cloud relay or a VPN instead.

Put cameras on their own VLAN

Cameras should not be able to reach the accounting workstation, and vice versa. A separate VLAN with tight rules limits the damage any single compromised device can do.

Credentials and firmware

Unique passwords per device, named accounts instead of a shared admin login, and a firmware review on every maintenance visit. Most camera vulnerabilities are patched long before they are exploited on a given site.
