Structured Cabling: The Standards Worth Insisting On

A network is only as good as the day it was installed. These are the standards we hold every pull to, and why they matter three years later.

Cat6 or Cat6A

Cat6 handles 1 Gbps everywhere and 10 Gbps on short runs, which covers most small offices. Cat6A carries 10 Gbps for the full 100 meters and handles higher-power PoE with less heat build-up in bundles.

If the building will host Wi-Fi 6E or 7 access points, cameras with heaters, or a server room refresh in the next five years, the price difference on the cable is trivial next to the cost of pulling it twice.

Certification, not a link light

A cable that lights up is not a cable that passes. Certification testing measures insertion loss, crosstalk and length on every run, and produces a report you keep. It is the only way to know a marginal pull will not turn into an intermittent fault next winter.

Labeling and rack discipline

Both ends of every run labeled, a patch panel that matches a printed map, velcro instead of zip ties, and service loops left in the ceiling. The next technician in that closet — possibly us, possibly not — should be able to trace any drop in under a minute.
