Migrating to VoIP Without Dropping a Single Call

June 24, 2026 5 min read

Most bad VoIP experiences are network problems, not phone problems. Fix the network first and the phones take care of themselves.

Port numbers before you touch a phone

Number porting takes days to weeks depending on the carrier. It is the one part of the project you cannot compress, so it starts first and everything else is scheduled around the port date.

The network has to be ready

Voice traffic needs priority. That means a managed switch with QoS, a voice VLAN, and enough PoE budget for every desk phone plus whatever else is already drawing from the switch.

We also measure jitter and packet loss on the internet circuit before committing. A connection that streams video fine can still make phone calls sound terrible.

E911 and the day the internet dies

Every extension needs a registered dispatchable location so emergency services arrive at the right suite, not the billing address. And every deployment needs a failover plan — usually automatic forwarding to mobile numbers — for the day the circuit goes down.
